COLUMBIA – Heart of Missouri United Way Board of Directors Chair Mitzi Clayton today announced that long-time Chief Operating Officer David Holtgraewe will serve as the interim leader for the organization as the on-going selection process for a permanent President and CEO moves through its next phases. “David’s reputation as a steady and capable servant leader makes him the natural choice to head our organization through transition to our next permanent President and CEO. He is a dedicated and skilled professional that lives the United Way mission every day.”

“I am humbled by the confidence the Board of Directors has placed in me to ensure Heart of Missouri United Way continues to push forward in our efforts to improve the lives of our most vulnerable residents here in mid-Missouri,” said Holtgraewe. “We have a strong, capable team focused on serving our community and fellow non-profit organizations that have a tremendous impact on those with unmet needs. We will close out our year with a successful community campaign and ensure the organization is well-positioned for the time when a permanent President and CEO is selected to grow our efforts to the next level of impact for our local community.”

With more than 22 years of service, Holtgraewe is the longest-tenured member of the existing Heart of Missouri United Way staff members and has earned a reputation as a compassionate professional with a strong business acumen. He has cultivated and developed many of the existing programmatic strategies for resource and community development across his tenure at United Way. David grew up in St. Charles, Missouri and graduated from Francis Howell High School before receiving his bachelor’s degree at Southwest Missouri State University. Prior to joining Heart of Missouri United Way, he worked for the JC Penney Company at locations in many mid-American communities. Throughout his life, David has been a volunteer for youth and other community organizations and maintains an active role in his church. He and his wife, Penny, have made Columbia their home for nearly 30 years and raised their two children here.

Heart of Missouri United Way initiated a selection committee process when current President and CEO, Andrew Grabau, announced in September that he would be accepting another growth opportunity and departing the organization in mid-December, capping of a decade of service leading the organization. “We received numerous applications for the permanent President and CEO role, and have conducted initial interviews,” said Heart of Missouri United Way Board of Directors Vice Chair Dr. Nikki Carter, who is leading the selection committee. “United Way is an organization focused on mobilizing communities to action so that all can thrive. We are focused on selecting the right Heart of Missouri United Way leader to maximize our impact here in mid-Missouri and will announce that decision in early 2025.”
